           Inthecity,atthattime,therewereanumberofcharitiessimilarinnaturetothatofthecaptain’s,whichHurstwoodnowpatronisedinalikeunfortunateway.Onewasaconventmission-houseoftheSistersofMercyinFifteenthStreet—arowofredbrickfamilydwellings,beforethedoorofwhichhungaplainwoodencontributionbox,onwhichwaspaintedthestatementthateverynoonamealwasgivenfreetoallthosewhomightapplyandaskforaid.Thissimpleannouncementwasmodestintheextreme,covering,asitdid,acharitysobroad.InstitutionsandcharitiesaresolargeandsonumerousinNewYorkthatsuchthingsasthisarenotoftennoticedbythemorecomfortablysituated.Buttoonewhosemindisuponthematter,theygrowexceedinglyunderinspection.Unlessonewerelookingupthismatterinparticular,hecouldhavestoodatSixthAvenueandFifteenthStreetfordaysaroundthenoonhourandneverhavenoticedthatoutofthevastcrowdthatsurgedalongthatbusythoroughfarethereturnedout,everyfewseconds,someweather-beaten,heavy-footedspecimenofhumanity,gauntincountenanceanddilapidatedinthematterofclothes.Thefactisnonethelesstrue,however,andthecolderthedaythemoreapparentitbecame.Spaceandalackofculinaryroominthemission-house,compelledanarrangementwhichpermittedofonlytwenty-fiveorthirtyeatingatonetime,sothatalinehadtobeformedoutsideandanorderlyentranceeffected.Thiscausedadailyspectaclewhich,however,hadbecomesocommonbyrepetitionduringanumberofyearsthatnownothingwasthoughtofit.
