           ItwasnotquitetwodaysafterthescenebetweenCarrieandHurstwoodintheOgdenPlaceparlourbeforeheagainputinhisappearance.Hehadbeenthinkingalmostuninterruptedlyofher.Herleniencyhad,inaway,inflamedhisregard.Hefeltthathemustsucceedwithher,andthatspeedily.

           Thereasonforhisinterest,nottosayfascination,wasdeeperthanmeredesire.Itwasafloweringoutoffeelingswhichhadbeenwitheringindryandalmostbarrensoilformanyyears.ItisprobablethatCarrierepresentedabetterorderofwomanthanhadeverattractedhimbefore.Hehadhadnoloveaffairsincethatwhichculminatedinhismarriage,andsincethentimeandtheworldhadtaughthimhowrawanderroneouswashisoriginaljudgment.Wheneverhethoughtofit,hetoldhimselfthat,ifhehadittodooveragain,hewouldnevermarrysuchawoman.Atthesametime,hisexperiencewithwomeningeneralhadlessenedhisrespectforthesex.Hemaintainedacynicalattitude,wellgroundedonnumerousexperiences.Suchwomenashehadknownwereofnearlyonetype,selfish,ignorant,flashy.Thewivesofhisfriendswerenotinspiringtolookupon.Hisownwifehaddevelopedacold,commonplacenaturewhichtohimwasanythingbutpleasing.Whatheknewofthatunder-worldwheregrovelthebeat-menofsociety(andheknewagreatdeal)hadhardenedhisnature.Helookeduponmostwomenwithsuspicion—asingleeyetotheutilityofbeautyanddress.Hefollowedthemwithakeen,suggestiveglance.Atthesametime,hewasnotsodullbutthatagoodwomancommandedhisrespect.
