           Bytheeveningofthe16ththesubtlehandofHurstwoodhadmadeitselfapparent.Hehadgiventhewordamonghisfriends—andtheyweremanyandinfluential—thatherewassomethingwhichtheyoughttoattend,and,asaconsequence,thesaleofticketsbyMr.Quincel,actingforthelodge,hadbeenlarge.Smallfour-linenoteshadappearedinallofthedailynewspapers.Thesehehadarrangedforbytheaidofoneofhisnewspaperfriendsonthe“Times,”Mr.HarryMcGarren,themanagingeditor.

           “Say,Harry,”Hurstwoodsaidtohimoneevening,asthelatterstoodatthebardrinkingbeforewendinghisbelatedwayhomeward,“youcanhelptheboysout,Iguess.”

           “Whatisit?”saidMcGarren,pleasedtobeconsultedbytheopulentmanager.

           “TheCusterLodgeisgettingupalittleentertainmentfortheirowngood,andthey’dlikealittlenewspapernotice.YouknowwhatImean—asquibortwosayingthatit’sgoingtotakeplace.”

           “Certainly,”saidMcGarren,“Icanfixthatforyou,George.”

           AtthesametimeHurstwoodkepthimselfwhollyinthebackground.ThemembersofCusterLodgecouldscarcelyunderstandwhytheirlittleaffairwastakingsowell.Mr.HarryQuincelwaslookeduponasquiteastarforthissortofwork.

           Bythetimethe16thhadarrivedHurstwood’sfriendshadralliedlikeRomanstoasenator’scall.Awell-dressed,good-natured,flatteringly-inclinedaudiencewasassuredfromthemomenthethoughtofassistingCarrie.
