           Itwasacityofover500,000,withtheambition,thedaring,theactivityofametropolisofamillion.Itsstreetsandhouseswerealreadyscatteredoveranareaofseventy-fivesquaremiles.Itspopulationwasnotsomuchthrivinguponestablishedcommerceasupontheindustrieswhichpreparedforthearrivalofothers.Thesoundofthehammerengagedupontheerectionofnewstructureswaseverywhereheard.Greatindustriesweremovingin.Thehugerailroadcorporationswhichhadlongbeforerecognisedtheprospectsoftheplacehadseizeduponvasttractsoflandfortransferandshippingpurposes.Street-carlineshadbeenextendedfaroutintotheopencountryinanticipationofrapidgrowth.Thecityhadlaidmilesandmilesofstreetsandsewersthroughregionswhere,perhaps,onesolitaryhousestoodoutalone—apioneerofthepopulouswaystobe.Therewereregionsopentothesweepingwindsandrain,whichwereyetlightedthroughoutthenightwithlong,blinkinglinesofgas-lamps,flutteringinthewind.Narrowboardwalksextendedout,passinghereahouse,andthereastore,atfarintervals,eventuallyendingontheopenprairie.

           Inthecentralportionwasthevastwholesaleandshoppingdistrict,towhichtheuninformedseekerforworkusuallydrifted.ItwasacharacteristicofChicagothen,andonenotgenerallysharedbyothercities,thatindividualfirmsofanypretensionoccupiedindividualbuildings.Thepresenceofamplegroundmadethispossible.Itgaveanimposingappearancetomostofthewholesalehouses,whoseofficeswereuponthegroundfloorandinplainviewofthestreet.
