           Shewasnowathin,thoughrugged,womanoftwenty-seven,withideasoflifecolouredbyherhusband’s,andfasthardeningintonarrowerconceptionsofpleasureanddutythanhadeverbeenhersinathoroughlycircumscribedyouth.ShehadinvitedCarrie,notbecauseshelongedforherpresence,butbecausethelatterwasdissatisfiedathome,andcouldprobablygetworkandpayherboardhere.Shewaspleasedtoseeherinawaybutreflectedherhusband’spointofviewinthematterofwork.Anythingwasgoodenoughsolongasitpaid—say,fivedollarsaweektobeginwith.Ashopgirlwasthedestinyprefiguredforthenewcomer.Shewouldgetinoneofthegreatshopsanddowellenoughuntil—well,untilsomethinghappened.Neitherofthemknewexactlywhat.Theydidnotfigureonpromotion.Theydidnotexactlycountonmarriage.Thingswouldgoon,though,inadimkindofwayuntilthebetterthingwouldeventuate,andCarriewouldberewardedforcomingandtoilinginthecity.Itwasundersuchauspiciouscircumstancesthatshestartedoutthismorningtolookforwork.
