           Itisnotstrange,then,thatthosewhowroteofhimshouldhaveekedouttheirscantyrecollectionswithalivelyfancy,anditisevidentthattherewasenoughinthelittlethatwasknownofhimtogiveopportunitytotheromanticscribe;therewasmuchinhislifewhichwasstrangeandterrible,inhischaractersomethingoutrageous,andinhisfatenotalittlethatwaspathetic.Induecoursealegendaroseofsuchcircumstantialitythatthewisehistorianwouldhesitatetoattackit.

           ButawisehistorianispreciselywhattheRev.RobertStricklandisnot.Hewrotehisbiographyavowedlyto"removecertainmisconceptionswhichhadgainedcurrency"inregardtothelaterpartofhisfather’slife,andwhichhad"causedconsiderablepaintopersonsstillliving."ItisobviousthattherewasmuchinthecommonlyreceivedaccountofStrickland’slifetoembarrassarespectablefamily.Ihavereadthisworkwithagooddealofamusement,anduponthisIcongratulatemyself,sinceitiscolourlessanddull.Mr.Stricklandhasdrawntheportraitofanexcellenthusbandandfather,amanofkindlytemper,industrioushabits,andmoraldisposition.ThemodernclergymanhasacquiredinhisstudyofthesciencewhichIbelieveiscalledexegesisanastonishingfacilityforexplainingthingsaway,butthesubtletywithwhichtheRev.RobertStricklandhas"interpreted"allthefactsinhisfather’slifewhichadutifulsonmightfinditinconvenienttoremembermustsurelyleadhiminthefullnessoftimetothehighestdignitiesoftheChurch.Iseealreadyhismuscularcalvesencasedinthegaitersepiscopal.
