           Thenextweekwasdreadful.Stroevewenttwiceadaytothehospitaltoenquireafterhiswife,whostilldeclinedtoseehim;andcameawayatfirstrelievedandhopefulbecausehewastoldthatsheseemedtobegrowingbetter,andthenindespairbecause,thecomplicationwhichthedoctorhadfearedhavingensued,recoverywasimpossible.Thenursewaspitifultohisdistress,butshehadlittletosaythatcouldconsolehim.Thepoorwomanlayquitestill,refusingtospeak,withhereyesintent,asthoughshewatchedforthecomingofdeath.Itcouldnowbeonlythequestionofadayortwo;andwhen,lateoneevening,StroevecametoseemeIknewitwastotellmeshewasdead.Hewasabsolutelyexhausted.Hisvolubilityhadlefthimatlast,andhesankdownwearilyonmysofa.Ifeltthatnowordsofcondolenceavailed,andIlethimlietherequietly.IfearedhewouldthinkitheartlessifIread,soIsatbythewindow,smokingapipe,tillhefeltinclinedtospeak.
