           ButthoughIwasnolessconvincedthanStroevethattheconnectionbetweenStricklandandBlanchewouldenddisastrously,Ididnotexpecttheissuetotakethetragicformitdid.Thesummercame,breathlessandsultry,andevenatnighttherewasnocoolnesstorestone’sjadednerves.Thesun-bakedstreetsseemedtogivebacktheheatthathadbeatdownonthemduringtheday,andthepassers-bydraggedtheirfeetalongthemwearily.IhadnotseenStricklandforweeks.Occupiedwithotherthings,Ihadceasedtothinkofhimandhisaffairs.Dirk,withhisvainlamentations,hadbeguntoboreme,andIavoidedhissociety.Itwasasordidbusiness,andIwasnotinclinedtotroublemyselfwithitfurther.

           OnemorningIwasworking.IsatinmyPyjamas.Mythoughtswandered,andIthoughtofthesunnybeachesofBrittanyandthefreshnessofthesea.BymysidewastheemptybowlinwhichtheconciergehadbroughtmemycafeaulaitandthefragmentofcroissantwhichIhadnothadappetiteenoughtoeat.Iheardtheconciergeinthenextroomemptyingmybath.Therewasatinkleatmybell,andIlefthertoopenthedoor.InamomentIheardStroeve’svoiceaskingifIwasin.Withoutmoving,Ishoutedtohimtocome.Heenteredtheroomquickly,andcameuptothetableatwhichIsat.

           "She’skilledherself,"hesaidhoarsely.

           "Whatdoyoumean?"Icried,startled.
