           ItwasaboutfiveyearsafterthisthatIdecidedtoliveinParisforawhile.IwasgrowingstaleinLondon.Iwastiredofdoingmuchthesamethingeveryday.Myfriendspursuedtheircoursewithuneventfulness;theyhadnolongeranysurprisesforme,andwhenImetthemIknewprettywellwhattheywouldsay;eventheirlove-affairshadatediousbanality.Wewereliketram-carsrunningontheirlinesfromterminustoterminus,anditwaspossibletocalculatewithinsmalllimitsthenumberofpassengerstheywouldcarry.Lifewasorderedtoopleasantly.Iwasseizedwithpanic.Igaveupmysmallapartment,soldmyfewbelongings,andresolvedtostartafresh.

           IcalledonMrs.StricklandbeforeIleft.Ihadnotseenherforsometime,andInoticedchangesinher;itwasnotonlythatshewasolder,thinner,andmorelined;Ithinkhercharacterhadaltered.Shehadmadeasuccessofherbusiness,andnowhadanofficeinChanceryLane;shedidlittletypingherself,butspenthertimecorrectingtheworkofthefourgirlssheemployed.Shehadhadtheideaofgivingitacertaindaintiness,andshemademuchuseofblueandredinks;sheboundthecopyincoarsepaper,thatlookedvaguelylikewateredsilk,invariouspalecolours;andshehadacquiredareputationforneatnessandaccuracy.Shewasmakingmoney.Butshecouldnotgetovertheideathattoearnherlivingwassomewhatundignified,andshewasinclinedtoremindyouthatshewasaladybybirth.Shecouldnothelpbringingintoherconversationthenamesofpeoplesheknewwhichwouldsatisfyyouthatshehadnotsunkinthesocialscale
