Whetheritwasthepurifyingofthedeadlyatmospherebytheopeningofthechapeldoor,orthereliefwhichweexperiencedbyfindingourselvesintheopenIknownot,butmostcertainlytheshadowofdreadseemedtoslipfromuslikearobe,andtheoccasionofourcominglostsomethingofitsgrimsignificance,thoughwedidnotslackenawhitinourresolution. Weclosedtheouterdoorandbarredandlockedit,andbringingthedogswithus,beganoursearchofthehouse. Wefoundnothingthroughoutexceptdustinextraordinaryproportions,andalluntouchedsaveformyownfootstepswhenIhadmademyfirstvisit. Neveroncedidthedogsexhibitanysymptomofuneasiness,andevenwhenwereturnedtothechapeltheyfriskedaboutasthoughtheyhadbeenrabbithuntinginasummerwood.
Themorningwasquickeningintheeastwhenweemergedfromthefront. Dr.VanHelsinghadtakenthekeyofthehalldoorfromthebunch,andlockedthedoorinorthodoxfashion,puttingthekeyintohispocketwhenhehaddone.
