ItwasansweredfrombehindDr.Seward’shousebytheyelpingofdogs,andafteraboutaminutethreeterrierscamedashingroundthecornerofthehouse. Unconsciouslywehadallmovedtowardsthedoor,andaswemovedInoticedthatthedusthadbeenmuchdisturbed. Theboxeswhichhadbeentakenouthadbeenbroughtthisway. Butevenintheminutethathadelapsedthenumberoftheratshadvastlyincreased. Theyseemedtoswarmovertheplaceallatonce,tillthelamplight,shiningontheirmovingdarkbodiesandglittering,balefuleyes,madetheplacelooklikeabankofearthsetwithfireflies. Thedogsdashedon,butatthethresholdsuddenlystoppedandsnarled,andthen,simultaneouslyliftingtheirnoses,begantohowlinmostlugubriousfashion. Theratsweremultiplyinginthousands,andwemovedout.
LordGodalmingliftedoneofthedogs,andcarryinghimin,placedhimonthefloor. Theinstanthisfeettouchedthegroundheseemedtorecoverhiscourage,andrushedathisnaturalenemies. Theyfledbeforehimsofastthatbeforehehadshakenthelifeoutofascore,theotherdogs,whohadbynowbeenliftedinthesamemanner,hadbutsmallpreyerethewholemasshadvanished.
Withtheirgoingitseemedasifsomeevilpresencehaddeparted,forthedogsfriskedaboutandbarkedmerrilyastheymadesuddendartsattheirprostratefoes,andturnedthemoverandoverandtossedthemintheairwithviciousshakes. Weallseemedtofindourspiritsrise.
