           Theentirememberseemsadensewebbedbedofweldedsinews;butcutintoit,andyoufindthatthreedistinctstratacomposeit:upper,middle,andlower.Thefibresintheupperandlowerlayers,arelongandhorizontal;thoseofthemiddleone,veryshort,andrunningcrosswisebetweentheoutsidelayers.Thistriunestructure,asmuchasanythingelse,impartspowertothetail.TothestudentofoldRomanwalls,themiddlelayerwillfurnishacuriousparalleltothethincourseoftilesalwaysalternatingwiththestoneinthosewonderfulrelicsoftheantique,andwhichundoubtedlycontributesomuchtothegreatstrengthofthemasonry.
