Therearecertainqueertimesandoccasionsinthisstrangemixedaffairwecalllifewhenamantakesthiswholeuniverseforavastpracticaljoke,thoughthewitthereofhebutdimlydiscerns,andmorethansuspectsthatthejokeisatnobody’sexpensebuthisown.However,nothingdispirits,andnothingseemsworthwhiledisputing.Heboltsdownallevents,allcreeds,andbeliefs,andpersuasions,allhardthingsvisibleandinvisible,nevermindhowknobby;asanostrichofpotentdigestiongobblesdownbulletsandgunflints.Andasforsmalldifficultiesandworryings,prospectsofsuddendisaster,periloflifeandlimb;allthese,anddeathitself,seemtohimonlysly,good-naturedhits,andjollypunchesinthesidebestowedbytheunseenandunaccountableoldjoker.ThatoddsortofwaywardmoodIamspeakingof,comesoveramanonlyinsometimeofextremetribulation;itcomesintheverymidstofhisearnestness,sothatwhatjustbeforemighthaveseemedtohimathingmostmomentous,nowseemsbutapartofthegeneraljoke.Thereisnothingliketheperilsofwhalingtobreedthisfreeandeasysortofgenial,desperadophilosophy;andwithitInowregardedthiswholevoyageofthePequod,andthegreatWhiteWhaleitsobject.
