YouobservethatintheordinaryswimmingpositionoftheSpermWhale,thefrontofhisheadpresentsanalmostwhollyverticalplanetothewater;youobservethatthelowerpartofthatfrontslopesconsiderablybackwards,soastofurnishmoreofaretreatforthelongsocketwhichreceivestheboom-likelowerjaw;youobservethatthemouthisentirelyunderthehead,muchinthesameway,indeed,asthoughyourownmouthwereentirelyunderyourchin.Moreoveryouobservethatthewhalehasnoexternalnose;andthatwhatnosehehas—hisspouthole—isonthetopofhishead;youobservethathiseyesandearsareatthesidesofhishead;nearlyonethirdofhisentirelengthfromthefront.Wherefore,youmustnowhaveperceivedthatthefrontoftheSpermWhale’sheadisadead,blindwall,withoutasingleorganortenderprominenceofanysortwhatsoever.
