Thelineoriginallyusedinthefisherywasofthebesthemp,slightlyvaporedwithtar,notimpregnatedwithit,asinthecaseofordinaryropes;forwhiletar,asordinarilyused,makesthehempmorepliabletotherope-maker,andalsorenderstheropeitselfmoreconvenienttothesailorforcommonshipuse;yet,notonlywouldtheordinaryquantitytoomuchstiffenthewhale-linefortheclosecoilingtowhichitmustbesubjected;butasmostseamenarebeginningtolearn,taringeneralbynomeansaddstotherope’sdurabilityorstrength,howevermuchitmaygiveitcompactnessandgloss.
OflateyearstheManillaropehasintheAmericanfisheryalmostentirelysupersededhempasamaterialforwhale-lines;for,thoughnotsodurableashemp,itisstronger,andfarmoresoftandelastic;andIwilladd(sincethereisanaestheticsinallthings),ismuchmorehandsomeandbecomingtotheboat,thanhemp.Hempisadusky,darkfellow,asortofIndian;butManillaisasagolden-hairedCircassiantobehold.
Thewhale-lineisonlytwothirdsofaninchinthickness.Atfirstsight,youwouldnotthinkitsostrongasitreallyis.Byexperimentitsoneandfiftyyarnswilleachsuspendaweightofonehundredandtwentypounds;sothatthewholeropewillbearastrainnearlyequaltothreetons.
