Here,now,aretwogreatwhales,layingtheirheadstogether;letusjointhem,andlaytogetherourown.
Ofthegrandorderoffolioleviathans,theSpermWhaleandtheRightWhalearebyfarthemostnoteworthy.Theyaretheonlywhalesregularlyhuntedbyman.TotheNantucketer,theypresentthetwoextremesofalltheknownvarietiesofthewhale.Astheexternaldifferencebetweenthemismainlyobservableintheirheads;andasaheadofeachisthismomenthangingfromthePequod’sside;andaswemayfreelygofromonetotheother,bymerelysteppingacrossthedeck:—where,Ishouldliketoknow,willyouobtainabetterchancetostudypracticalcetologythanhere?
Inthefirstplace,youarestruckbythegeneralcontrastbetweentheseheads.Botharemassiveenoughinallconscience;but,thereisacertainmathematicalsymmetryintheSpermWhale’swhichtheRightWhale’ssadlylacks.ThereismorecharacterintheSpermWhale’shead.Asyoubeholdit,youinvoluntarilyyieldtheimmensesuperioritytohim,inpointofpervadingdignity.Inthepresentinstance,too,thisdignityisheightenedbythepepperandsaltcolorofhisheadatthesummit,givingtokenofadvancedageandlargeexperience.Inshort,heiswhatthefishermentechnicallycalla"grey-headedwhale."
Letusnownotewhatisleastdissimilarintheseheads—namely,thetwomostimportantorgans,theeyeandtheear.
