Theunflinchingearnestnesswithwhichhedeclaredthesethings;—thedark,daringplayofhissleepless,excitedimagination,andallthepreternaturalterrorsofrealdelirium,unitedtoinvestthisGabrielinthemindsofthemajorityoftheignorantcrew,withanatmosphereofsacredness.Moreover,theywereafraidofhim.Assuchaman,however,wasnotofmuchpracticaluseintheship,especiallyasherefusedtoworkexceptwhenhepleased,theincredulouscaptainwouldfainhavebeenridofhim;butapprisedthatthatindividual’sintentionwastolandhiminthefirstconvenientport,thearchangelforthwithopenedallhissealsandvials—devotingtheshipandallhandstounconditionalperdition,incasethisintentionwascarriedout.Sostronglydidheworkuponhisdisciplesamongthecrew,thatatlastinabodytheywenttothecaptainandtoldhimifGabrielwassentfromtheship,notamanofthemwouldremain.Hewasthereforeforcedtorelinquishhisplan.NorwouldtheypermitGabrieltobeanywaymaltreated,sayordowhathewould;sothatitcametopassthatGabrielhadthecompletefreedomoftheship.Theconsequenceofallthiswas,thatthearchangelcaredlittleornothingforthecaptainandmates;andsincetheepidemichadbrokenout,hecarriedahigherhandthanever;declaringthattheplague,ashecalledit,wasathissolecommand;norshoulditbestayedbutaccordingtohisgoodpleasure.
