Itwasasightfullofquickwonderandawe!Thevastswellsoftheomnipotentsea;thesurging,hollowroartheymade,astheyrolledalongtheeightgunwales,likegiganticbowlsinaboundlessbowling-green;thebriefsuspendedagonyoftheboat,asitwouldtipforaninstantontheknife-likeedgeofthesharperwaves,thatalmostseemedthreateningtocutitintwo;thesuddenprofounddipintothewateryglensandhollows;thekeenspurringsandgoadingstogainthetopoftheoppositehill;theheadlong,sled-likeslidedownitsotherside;—allthese,withthecriesoftheheadsmenandharpooneers,andtheshudderinggaspsoftheoarsmen,withthewondroussightoftheivoryPequodbearingdownuponherboatswithoutstretchedsails,likeawildhenafterherscreamingbrood;—allthiswasthrilling.Nottherawrecruit,marchingfromthebosomofhiswifeintothefeverheatofhisfirstbattle;notthedeadman’shostencounteringthefirstunknownphantomintheotherworld;—neitherofthesecanfeelstrangerandstrongeremotionsthanthatmandoes,whoforthefirsttimefindshimselfpullingintothecharmed,churnedcircleofthehuntedspermwhale.
Thedancingwhitewatermadebythechasewasnowbecomingmoreandmorevisible,owingtotheincreasingdarknessoftheduncloud-shadowsflunguponthesea.Thejetsofvapornolongerblended,buttiltedeverywheretorightandleft;thewhalesseemedseparatingtheirwakes.Theboatswerepulledmoreapart;Starbuckgivingchasetothreewhalesrunningdeadtoleeward.
