Intheinstancewherethreeyearsintervenedbetweentheflingingofthetwoharpoons;andIthinkitmayhavebeensomethingmorethanthat;themanwhodartedthemhappening,intheinterval,togoinatradingshiponavoyagetoAfrica,wentashorethere,joinedadiscoveryparty,andpenetratedfarintotheinterior,wherehetravelledforaperiodofnearlytwoyears,oftenendangeredbyserpents,savages,tigers,poisonousmiasmas,withalltheothercommonperilsincidenttowanderingintheheartofunknownregions.Meanwhile,thewhalehehadstruckmustalsohavebeenonitstravels;nodoubtithadthricecircumnavigatedtheglobe,brushingwithitsflanksallthecoastsofAfrica;buttonopurpose.Thismanandthiswhaleagaincametogether,andtheonevanquishedtheother.IsayI,myself,haveknownthreeinstancessimilartothis;thatisintwoofthemIsawthewhalesstruck;and,uponthesecondattack,sawthetwoironswiththerespectivemarkscutinthem,afterwardstakenfromthedeadfish.Inthethree-yearinstance,itsofelloutthatIwasintheboatbothtimes,firstandlast,andthelasttimedistinctlyrecognizedapeculiarsortofhugemoleunderthewhale’seye,whichIhadobservedtherethreeyearsprevious.Isaythreeyears,butIamprettysureitwasmorethanthat.Herearethreeinstances,then,whichIpersonallyknowthetruthof;butIhaveheardofmanyotherinstancesfrompersonswhoseveracityinthematterthereisnogoodgroundtoimpeach.
