ItisathingwellknowntobothAmericanandEnglishwhale-ships,andaswellathingplaceduponauthoritativerecordyearsagobyScoresby,thatsomewhaleshavebeencapturedfarnorthinthePacific,inwhosebodieshavebeenfoundthebarbsofharpoonsdartedintheGreenlandseas.Norisittobegainsaid,thatinsomeoftheseinstancesithasbeendeclaredthattheintervaloftimebetweenthetwoassaultscouldnothaveexceededverymanydays.Hence,byinference,ithasbeenbelievedbysomewhalemen,thattheNor’WestPassage,solongaproblemtoman,wasneveraproblemtothewhale.Sothathere,inthereallivingexperienceoflivingmen,theprodigiesrelatedinoldtimesoftheinlandStrellomountaininPortugal(nearwhosetoptherewassaidtobealakeinwhichthewrecksofshipsfloateduptothesurface);andthatstillmorewonderfulstoryoftheArethusafountainnearSyracuse(whosewaterswerebelievedtohavecomefromtheHolyLandbyanundergroundpassage);thesefabulousnarrationsarealmostfullyequalledbytherealitiesofthewhalemen.
