Buttherewerestillotherandmorevitalpracticalinfluencesatwork.NorevenatthepresentdayhastheoriginalprestigeoftheSpermWhale,asfearfullydistinguishedfromallotherspeciesoftheleviathan,diedoutofthemindsofthewhalemenasabody.Therearethosethisdayamongthem,who,thoughintelligentandcourageousenoughinofferingbattletotheGreenlandorRightwhale,wouldperhaps—eitherfromprofessionalinexperience,orincompetency,ortimidity,declineacontestwiththeSpermWhale;atanyrate,thereareplentyofwhalemen,especiallyamongthosewhalingnationsnotsailingundertheAmericanflag,whohaveneverhostilelyencounteredtheSpermWhale,butwhosesoleknowledgeoftheleviathanisrestrictedtotheignoblemonsterprimitivelypursuedintheNorth;seatedontheirhatches,thesemenwillhearkenwithachildishfiresideinterestandawe,tothewild,strangetalesofSouthernwhaling.
