Butwerethecomingnarrativetorevealinanyinstance,thecompleteabasementofpoorStarbuck’sfortitude,scarcemightIhavethehearttowriteit;butitisathingmostsorrowful,nayshocking,toexposethefallofvalorinthesoul.Menmayseemdetestableasjointstock-companiesandnations;knaves,fools,andmurdererstheremaybe;menmayhavemeanandmeagrefaces;but,man,intheideal,issonobleandsosparkling,suchagrandandglowingcreature,thatoveranyignominiousblemishinhimallhisfellowsshouldruntothrowtheircostliestrobes.Thatimmaculatemanlinesswefeelwithinourselves,sofarwithinus,thatitremainsintactthoughalltheoutercharacterseemgone;bleedswithkeenestanguishattheundrapedspectacleofavalor-ruinedman.Norcanpietyitself,atsuchashamefulsight,completelystifleherupbraidingsagainstthepermittingstars.ButthisaugustdignityItreatof,isnotthedignityofkingsandrobes,butthataboundingdignitywhichhasnorobedinvestiture.Thoushaltseeitshininginthearmthatwieldsapickordrivesaspike;thatdemocraticdignitywhich,onallhands,radiateswithoutendfromGod;Himself!ThegreatGodabsolute!Thecentreandcircumferenceofalldemocracy!Hisomnipresence,ourdivineequality!
