Itwastrue,sherefineditto"position,"butitmeantthesamething,andinhisownmindtheoldnomenclaturestuck. Hehadreadherallthathewrote—poems,stories,essays—"Wiki-Wiki,""TheShameoftheSun,"everything. Andshehadalwaysandconsistentlyurgedhimtogetajob,togotowork—goodGod! —asifhehadn’tbeenworking,robbingsleep,exhaustinglife,inordertobeworthyofher.
Sothelittlethinggrewbigger. Hewashealthyandnormal,ateregularly,sleptlonghours,andyetthegrowinglittlethingwasbecominganobsession. Workperformed. Thephrasehauntedhisbrain. HesatoppositeBernardHigginbothamataheavySundaydinneroverHigginbotham’sCashStore,anditwasallhecoulddotorestrainhimselffromshoutingout:-
