Hespentlonghoursinthefreereading-room,goingoverwhatothershadwritten,studyingtheirworkeagerlyandcritically,comparingitwithhisown,andwondering,wondering,aboutthesecrettricktheyhaddiscoveredwhichenabledthemtoselltheirwork.
Hewasamazedattheimmenseamountofprintedstuffthatwasdead. Nolight,nolife,nocolor,wasshotthroughit. Therewasnobreathoflifeinit,andyetitsold,attwocentsaword,twentydollarsathousand—thenewspaperclippinghadsaidso. Hewaspuzzledbycountlessshortstories,writtenlightlyandcleverlyheconfessed,butwithoutvitalityorreality. Lifewassostrangeandwonderful,filledwithanimmensityofproblems,ofdreams,andofheroictoils,andyetthesestoriesdealtonlywiththecommonplacesoflife.
