           ArthurremainedatthegatewhileRuthclimbedMaria’sfrontsteps. Sheheardtherapidclickofthetype-writer,andwhenMartinletherin,foundhimonthelastpageofamanuscript. ShehadcometomakecertainwhetherornothewouldbeattheirtableforThanksgivingdinner; butbeforeshecouldbroachthesubjectMartinplungedintotheonewithwhichhewasfull. 

           "Here,letmereadyouthis,"hecried,separatingthecarboncopiesandrunningthepagesofmanuscriptintoshape. "It’smylatest,anddifferentfromanythingI’vedone. ItissoaltogetherdifferentthatIamalmostafraidofit,andyetI’veasneakingideaitisgood. Youbejudge. It’sanHawaiianstory. I’vecalledit‘Wiki-wiki.’" 

           Hisfacewasbrightwiththecreativeglow,thoughsheshiveredinthecoldroomandhadbeenstruckbythecoldnessofhishandsatgreeting. Shelistenedcloselywhileheread,andthoughhefromtimetotimehadseenonlydisapprobationinherface,atthecloseheasked:- 

           "Frankly,whatdoyouthinkofit?" 

           "IIdon’tknow,"she,answered. "Willitdoyouthinkitwillsell?" 

           "I’mafraidnot,"wastheconfession. "It’stoostrongforthemagazines. Butit’strue,onmywordit’strue." 

           "Butwhydoyoupersistinwritingsuchthingswhenyouknowtheywon’tsell?"shewentoninexorably. "Thereasonforyourwritingistomakealiving,isn’tit?" 

           "Yes,that’sright; butthemiserablestorygotawaywithme. Icouldn’thelpwritingit. Itdemandedtobewritten."
