ThedesiretowritewasstirringinMartinoncemore. Storiesandpoemswerespringingintospontaneouscreationinhisbrain,andhemadenotesofthemagainstthefuturetimewhenhewouldgivethemexpression. Buthedidnotwrite. Thiswashislittlevacation; hehadresolvedtodevoteittorestandlove,andinbothmattersheprospered. Hewassoonspillingoverwithvitality,andeachdayhesawRuth,atthemomentofmeeting,sheexperiencedtheoldshockofhisstrengthandhealth.
"Becareful,"hermotherwarnedheronceagain. "IamafraidyouareseeingtoomuchofMartinEden."

Herprodigiousinnocenceappalledhim,freezingonhislipsallardorsofspeech,andconvincinghim,inspiteofhimself,ofhisownunworthiness. Alsohewashandicappedinanotherway. Hehadhimselfneverbeeninlovebefore.
