           Sincethehonorariumtheyhadofferedwasthreehundredandfiftydollars,Martinthoughtitnotworthwhiletotelegraph. Then,too,therewasBrissenden’sconsenttobegained. Well,hehadbeenright,afterall. Herewasonemagazineeditorwhoknewrealpoetrywhenhesawit. Andthepricewassplendid,eventhoughitwasforthepoemofacentury. AsforCartwrightBruce,MartinknewthathewastheonecriticforwhoseopinionsBrissendenhadanyrespect. 

           Martinrodedowntownonanelectriccar,andashewatchedthehousesandcross-streetsslippingbyhewasawareofaregretthathewasnotmoreelatedoverhisfriend’ssuccessandoverhisownsignalvictory.
