           Hewasoppressedthroughoutthemealbythethoughtoffinger-bowls. Irrelevantly,insistently,scoresoftimes,hewonderedwhentheywouldcomeonandwhattheylookedlike. Hehadheardofsuchthings, andnow,soonerorlater,somewhereinthenextfewminutes,hewouldseethem,sitattablewithexaltedbeingswhousedthemay,andhewouldusethemhimself. Andmostimportantofall,fardownandyetalwaysatthesurfaceofhisthought,wastheproblemofhowheshouldcomporthimselftowardthesepersons. Whatshouldhisattitudebe? Hewrestledcontinuallyandanxiouslywiththeproblem. Therewerecowardlysuggestionsthatheshouldmakebelieve,assumeapart; andtherewerestillmorecowardlysuggestionsthatwarnedhimhewouldfailinsuchcourse, thathisnaturewasnotfittedtoliveuptoit,andthathewouldmakeafoolofhimself.
