           Theyknewalltheywishedtoknow;thebastionwasguarded.Alongerstayinthisdangerousspotwouldhavebeenuselessimprudence.D’Artagnanandhistwocompanionsturnedtheirbacks,andcommencedaretreatwhichresembledaflight.

           Onarrivingattheangleofthetrenchwhichwastoservethemasarampart,oneoftheGuardsmenfell.Aballhadpassedthroughhisbreast.Theother,whowassafeandsound,continuedhiswaytowardthecamp.

           D’Artagnanwasnotwillingtoabandonhiscompanionthus,andstoopedtoraisehimandassisthiminregainingthelines;butatthismomenttwoshotswerefired.Oneballstrucktheheadofthealready-woundedguard,andtheotherflatteneditselfagainstarock,afterhavingpassedwithintwoinchesofd’Artagnan.

           Theyoungmanturnedquicklyround,forthisattackcouldnothavecomefromthebastion,whichwashiddenbytheangleofthetrench.Theideaofthetwosoldierswhohadabandonedhimoccurredtohismind,andwiththemherememberedtheassassinsoftwoeveningsbefore.Heresolvedthistimetoknowwithwhomhehadtodeal,andfelluponthebodyofhiscomradeasifheweredead.

           Hequicklysawtwoheadsappearaboveanabandonedworkwithinthirtypacesofhim;theyweretheheadsofthetwosoldiers.
