AsAthosandPorthoshadforeseen,attheexpirationofahalfhour,d’Artagnanreturned.Hehadagainmissedhisman,whohaddisappearedasifbyenchantment.D’Artagnanhadrun,swordinhand,throughalltheneighboringstreets,buthadfoundnobodyresemblingthemanhesoughtfor.Thenhecamebacktothepointwhere,perhaps,heoughttohavebegun,andthatwastoknockatthedooragainstwhichthestrangerhadleaned;butthisproveduseless—forthoughheknockedtenortwelvetimesinsuccession,nooneanswered,andsomeoftheneighbors,whoputtheirnosesoutoftheirwindowsorwerebroughttotheirdoorsbythenoise,hadassuredhimthatthathouse,alltheopeningsofwhichweretightlyclosed,hadnotbeeninhabitedforsixmonths.
Whiled’Artagnanwasrunningthroughthestreetsandknockingatdoors,Aramishadjoinedhiscompanions;sothatonreturninghomed’Artagnanfoundthereunioncomplete.
