Itwasnotdifficulttoconquer,asshehadhithertodone,menprompttoletthemselvesbeseduced,andwhomthegallanteducationofacourtledquicklyintohernet.Miladywashandsomeenoughnottofindmuchresistanceonthepartoftheflesh,andshewassufficientlyskillfultoprevailoveralltheobstaclesofthemind.
Butthistimeshehadtocontendwithanunpolishednature,concentratedandinsensiblebyforceofausterity.ReligionanditsobservanceshadmadeFeltonamaninaccessibletoordinaryseductions.Therefermentedinthatsublimatedbrainplanssovast,projectssotumultuous,thatthereremainednoroomforanycapriciousormateriallove—thatsentimentwhichisfedbyleisureandgrowswithcorruption.Miladyhad,then,madeabreachbyherfalsevirtueintheopinionofamanhorriblyprejudicedagainsther,andbyherbeautyintheheartofamanhithertochasteandpure.Inshort,shehadtakenthemeasureofmotiveshithertounknowntoherself,throughthisexperiment,madeuponthemostrebellioussubjectthatnatureandreligioncouldsubmittoherstudy.
Manyatime,nevertheless,duringtheeveningshedespairedoffateandofherself.ShedidnotinvokeGod,weverywellknow,butshehadfaithinthegeniusofevil—thatimmensesovereigntywhichreignsinallthedetailsofhumanlife,andbywhich,asintheArabianfable,asinglepomegranateseedissufficienttoreconstructaruinedworld.
