TheSiegeofLaRochellewasoneofthegreatpoliticaleventsofthereignofLouisXIII,andoneofthegreatmilitaryenterprisesofthecardinal.Itis,then,interestingandevennecessarythatweshouldsayafewwordsaboutit,particularlyasmanydetailsofthissiegeareconnectedintooimportantamannerwiththestorywehaveundertakentorelatetoallowustopassitoverinsilence.
Thepoliticalplansofthecardinalwhenheundertookthissiegewereextensive.Letusunfoldthemfirst,andthenpassontotheprivateplanswhichperhapshadnotlessinfluenceuponhisEminencethantheothers.
OftheimportantcitiesgivenupbyHenryIVtotheHuguenotsasplacesofsafety,thereonlyremainedLaRochelle.Itbecamenecessary,therefore,todestroythislastbulwarkofCalvinism—adangerousleavenwithwhichthefermentsofcivilrevoltandforeignwarwereconstantlymingling.
Spaniards,Englishmen,andItalianmalcontents,adventurersofallnations,andsoldiersoffortuneofeverysect,flockedatthefirstsummonsunderthestandardoftheProtestants,andorganizedthemselveslikeavastassociation,whosebranchesdivergedfreelyoverallpartsofEurope.
LaRochelle,whichhadderivedanewimportancefromtheruinoftheotherCalvinistcities,was,then,thefocusofdissensionsandambition.Moreover,itsportwasthelastinthekingdomofFranceopentotheEnglish,andbyclosingitagainstEngland,oureternalenemy,thecardinalcompletedtheworkofJoanofArcandtheDucdeGuise.
