           D’Artagnanhadnotbeendeceived;thesetwomenhadonlyfollowedforthepurposeofassassinatinghim,hopingthattheyoungman’sdeathwouldbeplacedtotheaccountoftheenemy.

           Ashemightbeonlywoundedandmightdenouncetheircrime,theycameuptohimwiththepurposeofmakingsure.Fortunately,deceivedbyd’Artagnan’strick,theyneglectedtoreloadtheirguns.

           Whentheywerewithintenpacesofhim,d’Artagnan,whoinfallinghadtakencarenottoletgohissword,sprangupclosetothem.

           Theassassinscomprehendedthatiftheyfledtowardthecampwithouthavingkilledtheirman,theyshouldbeaccusedbyhim;thereforetheirfirstideawastojointheenemy.Oneofthemtookhisgunbythebarrel,anduseditashewouldaclub.Heaimedaterribleblowatd’Artagnan,whoavoideditbyspringingtooneside;butbythismovementheleftapassagefreetothebandit,whodartedofftowardthebastion.AstheRochellaiswhoguardedthebastionwereignorantoftheintentionsofthemantheysawcomingtowardthem,theyfireduponhim,andhefell,struckbyaballwhichbrokehisshoulder.

           Meantimed’Artagnanhadthrownhimselfupontheothersoldier,attackinghimwithhissword.Theconflictwasnotlong;thewretchhadnothingtodefendhimselfwithbuthisdischargedarquebus.TheswordoftheGuardsmanslippedalongthebarrelofthenow-uselessweapon,andpassedthroughthethighoftheassassin,whofell.

           D’Artagnanimmediatelyplacedthepointofhisswordathisthroat.

           "Oh,donotkillme!"criedthebandit.
