           D’Artagnansetoutwithhisfourcompanions,andfollowedthetrench;thetwoGuardsmarchedabreastwithhim,andthetwosoldiersfollowedbehind.

           Theyarrivedthus,screenedbytheliningofthetrench,tilltheycamewithinahundredpacesofthebastion.There,onturninground,d’Artagnanperceivedthatthetwosoldiershaddisappeared.

           Hethoughtthat,beginningtobeafraid,theyhadstayedbehind,andhecontinuedtoadvance.

           Attheturningofthecounterscarptheyfoundthemselveswithinaboutsixtypacesofthebastion.Theysawnoone,andthebastionseemedabandoned.
