“Whatabeautifulsunset,”saidDiana.“Look,Anne,it’sjustlikealandinitself,isn’tit?Thatlong,lowbackofpurplecloudistheshore,andtheclearskyfurtheronislikeagoldensea.”
“IfwecouldsailtoitinthemoonshineboatPaulwroteofinhisoldcomposition—youremember?—howniceitwouldbe,”saidAnne,rousingfromherreverie.“Doyouthinkwecouldfindallouryesterdaysthere,Diana—allouroldspringsandblossoms?ThebedsofflowersthatPaulsawtherearetherosesthathavebloomedforusinthepast?”
“Don’t!”saidDiana.“Youmakemefeelasifwewereoldwomenwitheverythinginlifebehindus.”
“IthinkI’vealmostfeltasifweweresinceIheardaboutpoorRuby,”saidAnne.“Ifitistruethatsheisdyinganyothersadthingmightbetrue,too.”
“Youdon’tmindcallinginatElishaWright’sforamoment,doyou?”askedDiana.“MotheraskedmetoleavethislittledishofjellyforAuntAtossa.”
“WhoisAuntAtossa?”
