“Therearejusttwopatchesofitinthewholecontinent,”saidPhil,“onerighthereinthepark,andonesomewhereelseinNovaScotia,Iforgetwhere.ThefamousHighlandRegiment,theBlackWatch,campedhereoneyear,and,whenthemenshookoutthestrawoftheirbedsinthespring,someseedsofheathertookroot.”
“Oh,howdelightful!”saidenchantedAnne.
“Let’sgohomearoundbySpoffordAvenue,”suggestedGilbert.“Wecanseeall‘thehandsomehouseswherethewealthynoblesdwell.’SpoffordAvenueisthefinestresidentialstreetinKingsport.Nobodycanbuildonitunlesshe’samillionaire.”
“Oh,do,”saidPhil.“There’saperfectlykillinglittleplaceIwanttoshowyou,Anne.ITwasn’tbuiltbyamillionaire.It’sthefirstplaceafteryouleavethepark,andmusthavegrownwhileSpoffordAvenuewasstillacountryroad.ItDIDgrow—itwasn’tbuilt!Idon’tcareforthehousesontheAvenue.They’retoobrandnewandplateglassy.Butthislittlespotisadream—anditsname—butwaittillyouseeit.”
