           SoGilbertwaswritingtoRuby!Verywell.Hehadaperfectrightto,ofcourse.Only!!AnnedidnotknowthatRubyhadwrittenthefirstletterandthatGilberthadanswereditfrommerecourtesy.ShetossedRuby’sletterasidecontemptuously.ButittookallDiana’sbreezy,newsy,delightfulepistletobanishthestingofRuby’spostscript.Diana’slettercontainedalittletoomuchFred,butwasotherwisecrowdedandcrossedwithitemsofinterest,andAnnealmostfeltherselfbackinAvonleawhilereadingit.Marilla’swasaratherprimandcolorlessepistle,severelyinnocentofgossiporemotion.YetsomehowitconveyedtoAnneawhiffofthewholesome,simplelifeatGreenGables,withitssavorofancientpeace,andthesteadfastabidinglovethatwasthereforher.
