           “Youarefondofcats?”saidMrs.Gardner,withaslightintonationoftolerantwonder.

           Anne,despiteheraffectionforRusty,wasnotespeciallyfondofcats,butMrs.Gardner’stoneannoyedher.InconsequentlysherememberedthatMrs.JohnBlythewassofondofcatsthatshekeptasmanyasherhusbandwouldallow.

           “TheyAREadorableanimals,aren’tthey?”shesaidwickedly.

           “Ihaveneverlikedcats,”saidMrs.Gardnerremotely.

           “Ilovethem,”saidDorothy.“Theyaresoniceandselfish.DogsareTOOgoodandunselfish.Theymakemefeeluncomfortable.Butcatsaregloriouslyhuman.”

           “Youhavetwodelightfuloldchinadogsthere.MayIlookatthemclosely?”saidAline,crossingtheroomtowardsthefireplaceandtherebybecomingtheunconsciouscauseoftheotheraccident.PickingupMagog,shesatdownonthecushionunderwhichwassecretedPriscilla’schocolatecake
