           TheoldDouglashomesteadwashalfamilefrom“Wayside”crestingawindyhill.Thehouseitselfwaslargeandcomfortable,oldenoughtobedignified,andgirdledwithmaplegrovesandorchards.Therewerebig,trimbarnsbehindit,andeverythingbespokeprosperity.WhateverthepatientenduranceinMr.Douglas’facehadmeantithadn’t,soAnnereflected,meantdebtsandduns.

           JohnDouglasmetthematthedoorandtookthemintothesitting-room,wherehismotherwasenthronedinanarmchair.

           AnnehadexpectedoldMrs.Douglastobetallandthin,becauseMr.Douglaswas.Instead,shewasatinyscrapofawoman,withsoftpinkcheeks,mildblueeyes,andamouthlikeababy’s.Dressedinabeautiful,fashionably-madeblacksilkdress,withafluffywhiteshawloverhershoulders,andhersnowyhairsurmountedbyadaintylacecap,shemighthaveposedasagrandmotherdoll.

           “Howdoyoudo,Janetdear?”shesaidsweetly.“Iamsogladtoseeyouagain,dear.”Sheputupherprettyoldfacetobekissed.“Andthisisournewteacher.I’mdelightedtomeetyou.MysonhasbeensingingyourpraisesuntilI’mhalfjealous,andI’msureJanetoughttobewhollyso.”

           PoorJanetblushed,Annesaidsomethingpoliteandconventional,andtheneverybodysatdownandmadetalk.Itwashardwork,evenforAnne,fornobodyseemedateaseexceptoldMrs.Douglas,whocertainlydidnotfindanydifficultyintalking.ShemadeJanetsitbyherandstrokedherhandoccasionally.
