“Anneiseighteen;IwasmarriedwhenIwasthatage.Weoldfolks,Marilla,aretoomuchgiventothinkingchildrennevergrowup,that’swhat.AnneisayoungwomanandGilbert’saman,andheworshipsthegroundshewalkson,asanyonecansee.He’safinefellow,andAnnecan’tdobetter.Ihopeshewon’tgetanyromanticnonsenseintoherheadatRedmond.Idon’tapproveofthemcoeducationalplacesandneverdid,that’swhat.Idon’tbelieve,”concludedMrs.Lyndesolemnly,“thatthestudentsatsuchcollegeseverdomuchelsethanflirt.”
“Theymuststudyalittle,”saidMarilla,withasmile.
“Preciouslittle,”sniffedMrs.Rachel.“However,IthinkAnnewill.Sheneverwasflirtatious.Butshedoesn’tappreciateGilbertathisfullvalue,that’swhat.Oh,Iknowgirls!CharlieSloaneiswildabouther,too,butI’dneveradvisehertomarryaSloane.TheSloanesaregood,honest,respectablepeople,ofcourse.Butwhenall’ssaidanddone,they’reSLOANES.”
