The Summons

           Mrs.GilliscalledAnneasideintoavacantroombeforethefuneralprocessionleftthehouse,andgaveherasmallpacket.

           “Iwantyoutohavethis,”shesobbed.“Rubywouldhavelikedyoutohaveit.It’stheembroideredcenterpieceshewasworkingat.Itisn’tquitefinishedtheneedleisstickinginitjustwhereherpoorlittlefingersputitthelasttimeshelaiditdown,theafternoonbeforeshedied.”

           “There’salwaysapieceofunfinishedworkleft,”saidMrs.Lynde,withtearsinhereyes.“ButIsupposethere’salwayssomeonetofinishit.”
