           TheEasternDistrictPenitentiaryofPennsylvania,standingatFairmountAvenueandTwenty-firstStreetinPhiladelphia,whereCowperwoodwasnowtoservehissentenceoffouryearsandthreemonths,wasalarge,gray-stonestructure,solemnandmomentousinitsmien,notatallunlikethepalaceofSforzasatMilan,althoughnotsodistinguished.Itstretcheditsgraylengthforseveralblocksalongfourdifferentstreets,andlookedaslonelyandforbiddingasaprisonshould.Thewallwhichincloseditsgreatareaextendingovertenacresandgaveitsomuchofitssolemndignitywasthirty-fivefeethighandsomesevenfeetthick.Theprisonproper,whichwasnotvisiblefromtheoutside,consistedofsevenarmsorcorridors,rangedoctopus-likearoundacentralroomorcourt,andoccupyingintheirsprawlinglengthabouttwo-thirdsoftheyardinclosedwithinthewalls,sothattherewasbutlittlespaceforthecharmoflawnorsward.Thecorridors,forty-twofeetwidefromouterwalltoouterwall,wereonehundredandeightyfeetinlength,andinfourinstancestwostorieshigh,andextendedintheirlongreachineverydirection.Therewerenowindowsinthecorridors,onlynarrowslitsofskylights,threeandone-halffeetlongbyperhapseightincheswide,letintheroof;andtheground-floorcellswereaccompaniedinsomeinstancesbyasmallyardtenbysixteenthesamesizeasthecellsproperwhichwassurroundedbyahighbrickwallineveryinstance.
