WhenCowperwoodreachedthejail,Jasperswasthere,gladtoseehimbutprincipallyrelievedtofeelthatnothinghadhappenedtomarhisownreputationasasheriff.Becauseoftheurgencyofcourtmattersgenerally,itwasdecidedtodepartforthecourtroomatnineo’clock.EddieZanderswasoncemoredelegatedtoseethatCowperwoodwasbroughtsafelybeforeJudgePaydersonandafterwardtakentothepenitentiary.Allofthepapersinthecasewereputinhiscaretobedeliveredtothewarden.

TheCowperwoodpartywalked,thedistancenotbeinggreat,andastheydidsotheytalkedofrathersimplethingstoavoidthemoreserious.
