           Thecellsandfloorsandroofsweremadeofstone,andthecorridors,whichwereonlytenfeetwidebetweenthecells,andinthecaseofthesingle-storyportiononlyfifteenfeethigh,werepavedwithstone.Ifyoustoodinthecentralroom,orrotunda,andlookeddownthelongstretcheswhichdepartedfromyouineverydirection,youhadasenseofnarrownessandconfinementnotcompatiblewiththeirlength.Theirondoors,withtheirouteraccompanimentofsolidwoodenones,thelatterusedattimestoshuttheprisonerfromallsightandsound,weregrimandunpleasingtobehold.Thehallswerelightenough,beingwhitewashedfrequentlyandsetwiththenarrowskylights,whichwereclosedwithfrostedglassinwinter;buttheywere,asareallsuchmatter-of-factarrangementsforincarceration,barewearisometolookupon.Lifeenoughtherewasinallconscience,seeingthattherewerefourhundredprisonershereatthattime,andthatnearlyeverycellwasoccupied;butitwasalifeofwhichnooneindividualwasessentiallyawareasaspectacle.Hewasofit;buthewasnot.Someoftheprisoners,afterlongservice,wereusedas"trusties"or"runners,"astheywerelocallycalled;butnotmany.Therewasabakery,amachine-shop,acarpenter-shop,astore-room,aflour-mill,andaseriesofgardens,ortruckpatches;butthemanipulationofthesedidnotrequiretheservicesofalargenumber.

           Theprisonproperdatedfrom1822,andithadgrown,wingbywing,untilitspresentconsiderablesizehadbeenreached.
