Asthegrammarhadshownhimthetie-ribsoflanguage,sothatbookshowedhimthetie-ribsofpoetry,andhebegantolearnmetreandconstructionandform,beneaththebeautyhelovedfindingthewhyandwhereforeofthatbeauty. Anothermodernbookhefoundtreatedpoetryasarepresentativeart,treateditexhaustively,withcopiousillustrationsfromthebestinliterature. Neverhadhereadfictionwithsokeenzestashestudiedthesebooks. Andhisfreshmind,untaxedfortwentyyearsandimpelledbymaturityofdesire,grippedholdofwhathereadwithavirilityunusualtothestudentmind.
Whenhelookedbacknowfromhisvantage-ground,theoldworldhehadknown,theworldoflandandseaandships,ofsailor-menandharpy-women,seemedaverysmallworld; andyetitblendedinwiththisnewworldandexpanded. Hismindmadeforunity,andhewassurprisedwhenatfirsthebegantoseepointsofcontactbetweenthetwoworlds. Andhewasennobled,aswell,bytheloftinessofthoughtandbeautyhefoundinthebooks. Thisledhimtobelievemorefirmlythaneverthatupabovehim,insocietylikeRuthandherfamily,allmenandwomenthoughtthesethoughtsandlivedthem. Downbelowwherehelivedwastheignoble,andhewantedtopurgehimselfoftheignoblethathadsoiledallhisdays,andtorisetothatsublimatedrealmwheredwelttheupperclasses.
