Allhischildhoodandyouthhadbeentroubledbyavagueunrest; hehadneverknownwhathewanted,buthehadwantedsomethingthathehadhuntedvainlyforuntilhemetRuth. Andnowhisunresthadbecomesharpandpainful,andheknewatlast,clearlyanddefinitely,thatitwasbeauty,andintellect,andlovethathemusthave.
DuringthoseseveralweekshesawRuthhalfadozentimes,andeachtimewasanaddedinspiration. ShehelpedhimwithhisEnglish,correctedhispronunciation,andstartedhimonarithmetic. Buttheirintercoursewasnotalldevotedtoelementarystudy. Hehadseentoomuchoflife,andhismindwastoomatured,tobewhollycontentwithfractions,cuberoot,parsing,andanalysis; andthereweretimeswhentheirconversationturnedonotherthemes—thelastpoetryhehadread,thelatestpoetshehadstudied. Andwhenshereadaloudtohimherfavoritepassages,heascendedtothetopmostheavenofdelight. Never,inallthewomenhehadheardspeak,hadheheardavoicelikehers. Theleastsoundofitwasastimulustohislove,andhethrilledandthrobbedwitheverywordsheuttered. Itwasthequalityofit,therepose,andthemusicalmodulation—thesoft,rich,indefinableproductofcultureandagentlesoul. Ashelistenedtoher,thererangintheearsofhismemorytheharshcriesofbarbarianwomenandofhags,and,inlesserdegreesofharshness,thestridentvoicesofworkingwomenandofthegirlsofhisownclass. Thenthechemistryofvisionwouldbegintowork,andtheywouldtroopinreviewacrosshismind,each,bycontrast,multiplyingRuth’sglories. Then,too,hisblisswasheightenedbytheknowledgethathermindwascomprehendingwhatshereadandwasquiveringwithappreciationofthebeautyofthewrittenthought.
