Hebelievedhecouldfindmagazinepublicationforit,andhefeltthatrecognitionbythemagazineswouldcommendhimtothebook-publishinghouses. "Ephemera"helikewisewrappedandmailedtoamagazine. DespiteBrissenden’sprejudiceagainstthemagazines,whichwasapronouncedmaniawithhim,Martindecidedthatthegreatpoemshouldseeprint. Hedidnotintend,however,topublishitwithouttheother’spermission. Hisplanwastogetitacceptedbyoneofthehighmagazines,and,thusarmed,againtowrestlewithBrissendenforconsent.
Martinbegan,thatmorning,astorywhichhehadsketchedoutanumberofweeksbeforeandwhicheversincehadbeenworryinghimwithitsinsistentclamortobecreated. Apparentlyitwastobearattlingseastory,ataleoftwentieth-centuryadventureandromance,handlingrealcharacters,inarealworld,underrealconditions. Butbeneaththeswingandgoofthestorywastobesomethingelse—somethingthatthesuperficialreaderwouldneverdiscernandwhich,ontheotherhand,wouldnotdiminishinanywaytheinterestandenjoymentforsuchareader. Itwasthis,andnotthemerestory,thatimpelledMartintowriteit. Forthatmatter,itwasalwaysthegreat,universalmotifthatsuggestedplotstohim.
