           Hestoppedtodinnerthatevening,and,muchtoRuth’ssatisfaction,madeafavorableimpressiononherfather. Theytalkedabouttheseaasacareer,asubjectwhichMartinhadathisfinger-ends,andMr.Morseremarkedafterwardthatheseemedaveryclear-headedyoungman. Inhisavoidanceofslangandhissearchafterrightwords,Martinwascompelledtotalkslowly,whichenabledhimtofindthebestthoughtsthatwereinhim. Hewasmoreateasethanthatfirstnightatdinner,nearlyayearbefore,andhisshynessandmodestyevencommendedhimtoMrs.Morse,whowaspleasedathismanifestimprovement. 

           "HeisthefirstmanthateverdrewpassingnoticefromRuth,"shetoldherhusband. "ShehasbeensosingularlybackwardwheremenareconcernedthatIhavebeenworriedgreatly." 

           Mr.Morselookedathiswifecuriously. 

           "Youmeantousethisyoungsailortowakeherup?"hequestioned. 

           "ImeanthatsheisnottodieanoldmaidifIcanhelpit,"wastheanswer. "IfthisyoungEdencanarouseherinterestinmankindingeneral,itwillbeagoodthing." 

           "Averygoodthing,"hecommented. "Butsuppose,andwemustsuppose,sometimes,mydear,supposehearousesherinteresttooparticularlyinhim?"
