           MartinhadencounteredhissisterGertrudebychanceonBroadwayasitproved,amostpropitiousyetdisconcertingchance. Waitingonthecornerforacar,shehadseenhimfirst,andnotedtheeager,hungrylinesofhisfaceandthedesperate,worriedlookofhiseyes. Intruth,hewasdesperateandworried. Hehadjustcomefromafruitlessinterviewwiththepawnbroker,fromwhomhehadtriedtowringanadditionalloanonhiswheel. Themuddyfallweatherhavingcomeon,Martinhadpledgedhiswheelsometimesinceandretainedhisblacksuit. 

           "There’stheblacksuit,"thepawnbroker,whoknewhiseveryasset,hadanswered. "Youneedn’ttellmeyou’vegoneandpledgeditwiththatJew,Lipka. Becauseifyouhave" 

           Themanhadlookedthethreat,andMartinhastenedtocry:- 

           "No,no; I’vegotit. ButIwanttowearitonamatterofbusiness." 

           "Allright,"themollifiedusurerhadreplied. "AndIwantitonamatterofbusinessbeforeIcanletyouhaveanymoremoney. Youdon’tthinkI’minitformyhealth?" 

           "Butit’saforty-dollarwheel,ingoodcondition,"Martinhadargued. "Andyou’veonlyletmehavesevendollarsonit. No,notevenseven. Sixandaquarter; youtooktheinterestinadvance." 

           "Ifyouwantsomemore,bringthesuit,"hadbeenthereplythatsentMartinoutofthestuffylittleden,sodesperateatheartastoreflectitinhisfaceandtouchhissistertopity.
