Ruthandherfamilywerehomeagain,andMartin,returnedtoOakland,sawmuchofher. Havinggainedherdegree,shewasdoingnomorestudying; andhe,havingworkedallvitalityoutofhismindandbody,wasdoingnowriting. Thisgavethemtimeforeachotherthattheyhadneverhadbefore,andtheirintimacyripenedfast.
Atfirst,Martinhaddonenothingbutrest. Hehadsleptagreatdeal,andspentlonghoursmusingandthinkinganddoingnothing. Hewaslikeonerecoveringfromsometerribleboutofhardship. Thefirstsignsofreawakeningcamewhenhediscoveredmorethanlanguidinterestinthedailypaper. Thenhebegantoreadagain—lightnovels,andpoetry; andafterseveraldaysmorehewasheadoverheelsinhislong-neglectedFiske. Hissplendidbodyandhealthmadenewvitality,andhepossessedalltheresiliencyandreboundofyouth.
Ruthshowedherdisappointmentplainlywhenheannouncedthathewasgoingtoseaforanothervoyageassoonashewaswellrested.
"Whydoyouwanttodothat?"sheasked.
"Money,"wastheanswer. "I’llhavetolayinasupplyformynextattackontheeditors. Moneyisthesinewsofwar,inmycase—moneyandpatience."
"Butifallyouwantedwasmoney,whydidn’tyoustayinthelaundry?"
"Becausethelaundrywasmakingabeastofme. Toomuchworkofthatsortdrivestodrink."
Shestaredathimwithhorrorinhereyes.
"Doyoumean—?"shequavered. Itwouldhavebeeneasyforhimtogetoutofit; buthisnaturalimpulsewasforfrankness,andherememberedhisoldresolvetobefrank,nomatterwhathappened.
